Intro

PepsiCo is a leading global drinks and convenient foods company headquartered in New York, with a presence in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.

PepsiCo's product portfolio includes a wide range of foods and drinks, including Lay's, Doritos, Cheetos, Gatorade, Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, Quaker and SodaStream. Through its PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy, launched in 2021, the company integrates sustainability into every aspect of its operations. 

In 2021, PepsiCo launched pep+ (PepsiCo Positive), the company’s end-to-end transformation strategy that places sustainability at the centre of how the company strives to create growth and build a stronger, more resilient business, today and in the future. 

Earthworm supports this strategy by collaborating on key sustainability initiatives, including regenerative agriculture in Spain, France, and Turkey; engaging with critical supply chain actors to advance sustainable farming practices. Additionally, Earthworm is helping PepsiCo refine and implement a responsible sourcing strategy for pulp and paper-based products. Other areas of collaboration, such as palm oil and pulp and paper grievance management, further reinforce PepsiCo’s objectives of ethical and environmentally responsible sourcing.

Papel y celulosa

Forests are under increasing pressure from human activity, resulting in forest loss and degradation. The forest product industry can contribute to these pressures but can also be an essential part of the solution to keep forests thriving and restore forest values.

Since 2024, Earthworm has been working with PepsiCo to help develop and implement an updated strategy for the sustainable sourcing of pulp and paper-based products, with a focus on packaging. This involves developing consistent global diligence tools and strong collaboration and communication on traceability, transparency and supplier engagement through action plans.  

Together, PepsiCo and Earthworm collaborate with forest industry actors, stakeholders, and local communities to enhance responsible sourcing outcomes and implement projects addressing the most pressing risks. The development of a robust grievance mechanism supports this.

Aceite de palma

Palm oil is a highly versatile and inexpensive vegetable oil used in many consumer goods products. It is also an extremely efficient crop, producing as much as 10 times per hectare as other vegetable oils. But its role as a major driver of economic growth is also associated with the loss of tropical forest habitats.

In 2025, PepsiCo and Earthworm began collaborating on an agreed-upon Grievance Service for Palm Oil, as well as for Pulp and Paper. This demonstrates PepsiCo’s ambition to achieve a fully traceable and responsible sourcing strategy for these commodities within its supply chains. Earthworm Foundation supports PepsiCo with several tools and interventions to put in place and monitor this endeavour, notably through the Grievance Service, including a “Rapid Response”, strong collaboration, personalised supplier engagement, and more.

In addition, PepsiCo has engaged Earthworm Foundation to conduct an analysis in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, to map forests, peatlands, and risks to indigenous lands, track losses from commodity expansion since 2001, and assess possible opportunities for conservation, reforestation, and peatland restoration.   

Regenerative Agriculture

Our planet’s soil nurtures and feeds billions of people and other terrestrial life. Fertile soil is integral in all ecosystems, yet it faces continuous pressure and degradation. Regenerative agriculture is one approach to help restore and conserve the health of our soils, food systems and landscapes.

Earthworm is working with PepsiCo to promote the adoption of Regenerative Agriculture within its supply chain, supporting initiatives that span various raw materials, including canola, corn, sugarbeets, and sunflowers. 

In Spain, the focus is on engaging key supply chain actors; in France, on strengthening connections with other downstream food industries across the supply chain and between suppliers and farmers implementing regenerative agriculture; and in Turkey, on launching a targeted program for sugar beet and corn.
