Sixteen years ago, the area where the Gambangan community in Indonesia now lives was a forested home to Sumatran tigers, deer, jungle fowl and many bird species. In 2002, a local leader cleared 160 hectares of forest to plant oil palm.

The community later learned that the land is prone to flooding -- 60 percent of the area is immersed underwater for six months of the year. These conditions make growing oil palm impossible, which leaves the farmers in poverty and lacking access to electricity. They are not helped by their location, which is only accessible through the PT Surya Bratasena Plantation they live within.
