Commodities: Palm oil

Intro

Industrias del Espino S.A. (IDE) is a Peruvian company with more than 40 years of experience in the production and marketing of palm oil derivatives. It operates a refinery and a palm kernel mill, transforming crude palm oil (CPO) and crude palm kernel oil (PKO) into products for mass consumption and industrial use. IDE also operates its own extraction plant, processing fresh fruit bunches (FFB) sourced from third-party plantations.

Since 2025, Earthworm Foundation has been working with Industrias del Espino on responsible sourcing and community relations. During 2025, this collaboration focused on co-creating the first version of IDE’s Responsible Sourcing Programme (RSP). The programme sets out a framework to progressively ensure that CPO, PKO, and RFF sourced by IDE are aligned with sustainability expectations, including no deforestation, no exploitation, respect for human rights, and compliance with NDPE principles and national standards.

As part of this work, Earthworm also supported IDE in strengthening its approach to community relations. In 2025, this included accompanying the company in coordinating efforts with Grupo Palmas, now part of IDE’s supply chain, to improve engagement and relationships with local communities.

A Sustainable Production is Possible

Key Milestones

Key impacts

Palm growers adopt more sustainable practices and are integrated into IDE’s supply chain through clear sourcing expectations and support.

Palm oil

Oil palm is one of the most efficient oil crops worldwide, with high yields per hectare and a wide range of uses in the food, cosmetics, chemicals, and energy industries.

In Peru, its production is mainly concentrated in the Amazon, where it represents a significant source of income and employment for agro-industrial companies and small producers.

However, the oil palm value chain faces significant sustainability challenges, such as deforestation, respect for human rights, working conditions, and the inclusion of small producers. Therefore, responsible sourcing, traceability, and the adoption of standards such as RSPO and due diligence approaches have become key elements in ensuring access to international markets and the long-term sustainability of the sector.
