Upfield is a global leader in plant-based foods, driving positive change for both people and the planet through its established power brands and its investment in cutting-edge food research. Upfield is a market leader across our four core categories—plant–based Butters and Spreads, Creams, Liquids, and Cheeses—providing delicious, nutritious food that is better for our health and our habitat.

Upfield serves 90 countries worldwide and has over 100 scientists working at the Upfield Food Science Centre in the heart of Europe’s ‘Silicon Valley of Foods’. They work to innovate, renovate and refresh Upfield’s portfolio of products, which includes power brands like Flora, Becel, ProActiv, Rama, Country Crock, BlueBand and Violife.

In 2020, Upfield entered into its first agreement with Earthworm Foundation. This partnership primarily focused on palm oil traceability and deforestation monitoring, utilising Starling satellite monitoring co-developed by Earthworm and Airbus.

In 2022, Upfield became a member of Earthworm Foundation, expanding its collaboration to include the pulp and paper supply chain. Additionally, in 2023, Upfield invested in Earthworm's Southern Central Forest Spine (SCFS) Landscape. This initiative supports local stakeholders in developing pathways for regenerating lives and nature, enhancing supply chain and farmer resilience, and achieving responsible sourcing goals.

Palm oil

Palm oil is a highly versatile and inexpensive vegetable oil used in many consumer goods products. It is also an extremely efficient crop, producing as much as 10 times per hectare as other vegetable oils. But its role as a major driver of economic growth is also associated with the loss of tropical forest habitats.

In October 2019, Upfield achieved 100% RSPO Sustainable Certification for all purchased palm oil. They have since engaged with Earthworm to ensure traceability and transparency in their palm supply chain. They use Starling Satellite monitoring to safeguard forests, actively support Earthworm’s landscape initiatives, and work closely with suppliers to promote direct transformation in workers' and farmers' rights.

Pulp & Paper

Forests are under pressure from human activity that results in forest loss and degradation. The pulp and paper industry can be one of these pressures, as trees from all over the world feed global demand for paper based materials. Recycled fibre is gaining popularity but virgin fibre from trees remains the main source for a variety of reasons.

Upfield is a pioneer in innovation, moving from plastic to paper in their packaging. In 2022 they created the world’s first paper based tub for chilled foods. Since paper is a high-deforestation-risk material, they have also started working with Earthworm on their pulp risk assessment and grievance monitoring since 2023. They are committed to responsible sourcing, and they have achieved 99% FSC/PEFC Certification in 2022.
