I am writing to you on this Valentine day because I would like you to know how much I love you.
Every day you are here for me. You grow the wheat I eat and the coffee I drink. You create the fibre for my clothes and filter the water I drink. Even the wood that blazed in my chimney and warmed me last Christmas, I owe it to you and to the work of your incredible team of ground beetles, earthworms, mycorrhizae, bacteria and other organisms.
My life, and those of millions like me, are fostered, enriched, and are dependent on you. We live, because you are alive!
Your generosity is limitless. You give food to birds and a home to moles and foxes. But more importantly, you recycle leaves, branches and even some of the chemicals which are dumped onto you.
I wish we’d spend more time together. Ideally, I’d love to introduce you to more people so they could see all your qualities and your beauty. I know you are very shy and like to stay undercover. But please, for once, accept my invitation.
As I hold you in my palms, I realise that you are holding me in yours.
And as farmers, decision makers, executives across the world contend with climate change, and worry about tomorrow, they are beginning to Look Down Too, dear soil. And like myself, they look up, to you.
Be sure that in 2025 I will remain on your side, trying to do everything so that you can be healthy and happy.
With love
Your Earthworm.
