Why postponing the EUDR will undermine global efforts to fight deforestation– Earthworm Foundation’s Position

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has been a major milestone in Europe’s commitment to combating deforestation, sending a strong signal to the world about the urgency of protecting forests.

Earthworm Foundation believes that delaying the EUDR by a year would weaken this message globally, undermining momentum in the fight against deforestation. We are confident that operators in key raw materials, including palm oil, soy, wood, and charcoal, are capable of meeting EUDR requirements, making a postponement counterproductive.

While we acknowledge certain weaknesses in the EUDR and recognise that poor implementation could lead to unintended consequences, such as the exclusion of small producers, and that the level of preparedness varies from one commodity to another (not all commodities/raw materials are fully prepared for compliance), we remain convinced that postponing its implementation will be counterproductive.
