These nutritional powerhouses are packed with antioxidants and micronutrients
Hazelnuts come from hazelnut orchards, which are mainly found in Mediterranean-type climates. While Turkey is the world’s largest producer of hazelnuts, production can also be found in other countries such as Italy and Chile.
The hazelnut has a smooth, brown shell that encloses the edible kernel. Whilst it can be mixed with chocolate, the kernel itself can be eaten raw, roasted, ground into a paste or in the form of hazelnut oil.
In 2019 we began working with Ferrero on its hazelnut value chain, visiting farmers in Turkey and Italy to understand issues and opportunities on the ground.
We are helping Ferrero to evolve its responsible souring approach for hazelnuts, including assessing all its policies and protocols around responsible sourcing, as well as partnering in the field to create bottom-up solutions.
To drive the highest social standards, we will be examining worker conditions, employment rights, and running pilot projects with seasonal workers and local communities.
