In October 2022, Earthworm Foundation commenced work under an agreement with PT Toba Pulp Lestari (TPL) which operates in North Sumatra, Indonesia in order to review the company’s community engagement approach.
This work is split into two main areas. Firstly, assessing current practices. Earthworm Foundation will review the company’s social engagement systems and processes. This includes conflict management. Earthworm teams will be deployed in the field in mid-October to see the company operations first-hand and also to meet with a wide range of key stakeholders, including local communities, CSOs (Civil Society Organisations) and government representatives.
Secondly, formulating targeted recommendations and action planning. From the core findings above, Earthworm will provide a series of targeted recommendations, as well as support to formulate an action plan where changes can be applied in the short, medium and long term.
Earthworm is committed to operating transparently and will provide regular updates on both key findings and progress under this work. Earthworm teams will share preliminary findings and the next steps in December.
